The Mustang at 60: An American Icon Stampedes into the Future

Development of the Mustang began in the early 1960s as the brainchild of Allentown native Lee Iacocca,
who was then vice president and general manager of Ford. He wanted to develop an affordable
American sports coupe aimed at the emerging youth market; many dedicated Ford engineers and
designers, notably Gale Halderman, who created the design that won the hearts of millions; proving to
be the right car at the right time. Introduced at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964 creating
“Mustanmania,” which led to sales of 419,000 units in its first year. 60 years later, the new innovative
