About the Museum

What is the mission of the America On Wheels museum?
America On Wheels Mission, as a transportation Museum, is to educate and entertain children and adults and preserve the historical, social and cultural impact of our nation’s over-the-road transportation systems, while contributing to the revitalization of its community.

What year did America On Wheels open?
Museum opened in April of 2008.

How big is the museum?
The building is 43,000 square feet. The museum offers over 23,000 square feet of Exhibit space divided into three main galleries and several smaller Exhibits.

What is the history of the building?
The office is the only remaining part of the old building which use to be a meat packing plant called A&B meats (founded in 1887).

What are your hours and admission rates?

Does the Museum offer free days?
Yes, seniors (62+) are FREE the first Thursday of each month. Children (5 and under) get in for FREE during museum hours. Children (12 and under) are FREE every Saturday & Sunday. Please check calendar updates for special offers & promotions.

How do you get to the museum and where are you located?
America On Wheels is located on 5 North Front Street, Allentown PA 18102. Please click here for directions.

Is there  parking outside the museum?
Yes.

Can I bring drinks and food in the museum?
Unfortunately, visitors can’t bring any outside food or drinks. America On Wheels has a HubCap Café where we serve various snacks and beverages. Please call to confirm times of operation (subject to change due to Rentals)

Is the museum handicap accessible?
Yes, the museum is handicap accessible. Elevators and ramps serve all public areas within the building.

Visit

Can you take pictures?
Yes, visitors are allowed to take photos.

How long does it take to tour the museum?
Generally, it takes about 1 – 1 ½ hours. However, we welcome all visitors to stay longer!

How many vehicles are in the museum?
There are over 75 cars, trucks, motorcycles, & bikes in the museum.

When do your Exhibits change?
Exhibits change every 6 months.

Can I come to the Museum just to visit the Museum Shop? If so, do I have to pay the admission fee?
Yes, you do not have to pay any admission fee to go in the Museum Store.

Can I store luggage or other items during my Museum visit?
Yes, the museum’s coat check is located next to the bathrooms on the first & second floor.

HubCap Cafe

What is the HubCap Cafe?
The HubCap Cafe is a fully restored 1950’s soda fountain. Cafe is open certain times of the year.  Call the office for hours.

What do you serve in the Cafe?
We serve hot dogs, soft pretzels, chips, ice cream, floats, milkshakes, & more!

Volunteering and Internships

Can I volunteer at the Museum?

Are internships available?
Yes, we do accept Interns. Please contact the Executive Director, Linda Merkel, to see if any spots are open at 610-432-4200 x11.

Membership

How do I become a Member?

What are the benefits of becoming a Member?
Members can tour the museum for one year with their membership cards. Please click here to see all the benefits for each level!

 I am a current Member. How can I change my name and/or address and continue to receive mail from the Museum?
Please contact Museum Administration office at 610-432-4200  or email fund_development@americaonwheels.org

Can I give a Membership as a gift?
Of course! There is a section on the membership form where you can check mark as a “Gift”. All you have to do is fill out the member’s information and we’ll send them their card out. (Please allow 1-2 weeks for processing)

I purchased a membership, when will my card arrive?
Generally it will take about 1-2 weeks. If you decide to come before you get your card, simply just ask the staff person on site.

Rentals & Group Tours

Can I rent a room out?
Yes, America On Wheels offers ample facilities to hold meetings, banquets, seminars, holiday parties, client appreciation functions or other company events in a unique setting.

How do I schedule a Group Tour?
Please reserve your tour at least two weeks in advance by calling America On Wheels at 610-432-4200 x10. Click here for more information.
