Preserving the Past, Looking to the Future!
By: Linda Merkel, Executive Director

Look who's taking center stage! America On Wheels turns 5 in April and is getting set to celebrate the entire month. Visit our website at www.americaonwheels.org for a complete listing of the month's events and mark your calendars for an exciting family outing at America On Wheels. As we approach this milestone, we are excited for the accomplishments we have achieved. The museum continues to offer an outstanding array of unique and classic vehicles and artifacts showing the evolution of the transportation industry. We have expanded our educational programs and look forward to the ones we have for the upcoming year. Our annual fundraising gala, Moonlight Memories, has grown and offers our guests a fun and enjoyable evening. And because of the unique setting the museum provides, we have seen an increase in the number of social events hosted by both individuals and companies. America On Wheels is looking forward to the upcoming waterfront development and embraces being an anchor facility and welcoming our new neighbors as they become established along the waterfront.

America On Wheels has kicked off its Capacity Campaign for 2013. Our goal is $2 million. The money raised will be used to sustain and grow our endowment fund and offer additional educational programs. This will allow us to upgrade and expand the facility and exhibits so we can continue to provide our guests with the outstanding museum experience they have come to expect from this local treasure. With your help, we will continue to inspire all who visit the museum. Please consider responding generously to our Campaign.

In 2013 the museum will be setting the stage for a number of exciting educational "performances." The Restoration Learning Center will soon be ready to raise the curtain and begin showing our visitors the processes involved in refurbishing these vehicles back to their original state of grandeur. Various media, including story boards, photos, videos, and occasional live demonstrations will be used to show the many and varied processes involved in restoring these classic vehicles. The museum will also be hosting a "Road Show." In collaboration with PennDOT, we will be presenting "The History of Bridges." This will be a very enlightening program showing the evolution of bridges, the various types, materials used and the forces that bridges are exposed to and how they are constructed to accommodate these forces. We're also happy to announce that "Safety Square" will be a new major force in safety education this spring. It will include injury/accident prevention programs and will focus on safety education for both children and adults.

America On Wheels was excited to open our Art Gallery this past year. The works of both new and established artists will be gracing the walls throughout the year. The museum is thrilled to offer this additional gallery for our visitors as we feel this is a natural evolution of our mission to preserve and present various aspects of our transportation culture and heritage. America On Wheels Museum looks forward to treating our guests to a truly unique museum experience that is rarely available in any other automotive museum in the country.

As the stage is set for 2013, the museum staff and Board of Directors want to thank our dedicated volunteers. They are a loyal and knowledgeable group of individuals who offer countless hours of assistance and provide our visitors with an enjoyable and educational museum experience!
