1959 Pontiac Catalina Convertible:
Original and unrestored, this remarkable and rare 1959 Pontiac Catalina enjoyed an adventurous youth. Its first owner so loved his car that he took it with him to Cuba when he was stationed there in the days preceding Fidel Castor’s communist revolution and subsequent takeover of the tiny Caribbean island nation. Both the owner and his beloved Catalina escaped Castro’s revolution unscathed, and the car has worn a “Republic De Cuba” windshield sticker as a reminder of its brief time abroad. The second owner purchased the car 20 years ago, after which he installed a new top and carpet and detailed the engine compartment. Built with the 389 CI V-8 engine introduced that year, the car uses a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission and is equipped with power steering and brakes, spinner wheel covers, wide Whitewall tires and a push-button radio. It must have looked especially sharp cruising around Havana in its sunny combination of White paint, White soft top and flashy Red interior, but it is just as well suited to making the trip from the East Coast to the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise, a trip it has happily made on more than one occasion.
